So I usually straighten my hair (like every day I'm not even kidding) because when my hair is curly it's short and I hate short hair. But your blog has inspired me to try to start wearing my hair natural. Do you have any tips for shampoos or products?
Oh wow! I’m so glad you’ve been inspired. :)
I used to be the same way, and my hair just kept getting shorter and shorter.. It was breaking off from all the straightening, and all I really wanted was longer hair so straightening felt like a quick fix when really it was the biggest problem with my growth. /:
What really works well for me is co washing. I was hesitant to do it because I thought my hair wouldn’t be clean enough, but I knew that shampoo was drying up my curls. So I started washing with conditioner! My curls haven’t been this soft and bouncy in ages. Aussie Moist Conditioner is what I always come back to. Love mostly everything Aussie. It’s great and not wildly expensive.
As for products, I love the Shea Moisture line. They use lots of organic ingredients and skip bad things like sulfates and parabens. Their “curl enhancing smoothie” in coconut & hibiscus is one of my faves. :)
I really try not to use too many different products, because there’s lots of weird things in them. When I wanna revive them in the morning I just use water and a spray bottle and a bit of that curl smoothie stuff. Just plain conditioner does the trick pretty well too, though! You’ve gotta experiment and see what your hair likes best, haha.
My *holy grail* thing though is organic, virgin coconut oil. :) Dr. Bronners specifically. I use it as a deep conditioning treatment, and a bit whenever I feel like my hair feels dry, and to smooth away any frizzies. It’s very light and smooth and not greasy and your curls will suck it right up. I use it all the time.
Also, there’s soooo many good curly hair videos on youtube. I love ShamelessMaya. She’s got a ton of great ones from before she cut her hair!
I hope that helps, and I’m sure your curls are so gorgeous. Good luck on your journey! :)
